AOTW: Swift Swim, Chlorophyll, and Sand Rush

Abiliteers, I feel the need. The need for acceleration beyond the usual pace at which I move in a forward direction. I’ve also conveniently wrapped chains around my tires so I can do so in any weather! In the summer. I didn’t think this scenario through well enough, guys. ANYHOO, this is Ability of the Week: Swift Swim, Chlorophyll, AND Sand Rush!

This trio of Abilities all function in the same manner. When a certain weather condition is activated, the pokémon with the corresponding Ability has their Speed doubled for the duration of the weather! Swift Swim (gen three) is activated during a rain storm, Chlorophyll (also gen three) comes into effect when the battlefield is bathed in bright sunlight, and Sand Rush (gen five) takes hold when a sandstorm blows through the arena. Sand Rush also comes with a bonus effect of negating damage from the sandstorm even if the pokémon using the Ability is not a Ground, Rock, or Steel type.

Swift Swim and Chlorophyll are available on a TON of pokémon, over thirty apiece. Some noteworthy users include Kingdra, Floatzel, Leavanny, Shiftry, and Leafeon. Sand Rush, meanwhile, is usable by only six pokémon over three families: Sandslash, Stoutland, and Excadrill, the latter two of which have the capacity to be quite useful with Sand Rush. Excadrill falls in with the rest of the sweep-worthy Swift Swim and Chlorophyll users. Herdier meanwhile, is naturally a bit wall-like, and Sand Rush only serves to amplify its staying power by giving its big bite the opportunity to strike first.

It should go without saying at this point, but your strategy with these and any weather-based Ability should include an auto-weather activating pokémon. Whether that’s a lead-in on a singles team, or a partner on a multi-battles team, you should have a pokémon with Drought, Drizzle, or Sand Stream somewhere on your team to compliment your speedster.

That does it for this week, boys and girls. Those in the Midwest, don’t forget to check out 649 Monsters next weekend! I and a ton of other spectacular artists strut our stuff in this PKMNcast-built art show benefitting Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play charity! We’ll see you in Milwaukee!
