AOTW: Huge Power and Pure Power

How’s it going, trainers and trainerettes? Your portly purveyor of potent passive pokémon powers is back this week with some peculiar “P”-themed wordplay and yet another Ability of the Week! A couple of weeks ago we recorded episode 40 of It’s Super Effective, and went over a whopping five featured teams. During the episode, we talked about Pierre’s team, and his Cubone. You’ll notice the held item, Thick Club attached to Cubone. This item doubles the Attack stat of Cubone and its evolution, Marowak. And I thought to myself, “Man, Wil. You need to be not so fat.” But then I thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if there was an Ability with the same effect as the Thick Club?” Well, after I gave up on the notion of not being so fat (this is America, after all), I found not one, but TWO Abilities that can do the same thing as the Thick Club for your pokémon. Settle in, this is Ability of the Week: Huge Power AND Pure Power!

AOTW: Lightningrod and Storm Drain

When it comes to Pokémon, some Abilities are just so good that the developers go ahead and make the same one for different types of monsters. A while back, we discussed Snow Cloak and Sand Veil, and in the very first Ability of the Week, we went over Overgrow, Blaze, and Torrent – effectively the same Abilities, but applied to different monsters with different conditions triggering their effects. This week, we’re looking at two more Abilities like this, and these guys are most effective in Double and Triple Battles. There’s a perfect storm a-brewin’ today! This is Ability of the Week: Lightningrod AND Storm Drain!

You have Brick Break on one of your team? Shut up, Catie, nobody asked you. This week we’re talking about a way to pass by your opponent’s defensive moves without so much as a Tail Whip! Watch out for Revolver Oshawott, because we’re Solid Snivying it today! This is Ability of the Week: Infiltrator!

How’s it going, training fanatics? Welcome back to Ability of the Week! Well, if you’ve listened to the M.G.C. or O.L.D.S.C.H.O.O.L. episodes of It’s Super Effective or dropped by the PokéTalk forums, you know that our esteemed Editor-In-Chief SBJ has been cooking up a PKMNcast “Gray League”, with as-close-to-real-life-as-possible Gym Leaders for you to challenge. And like many of you, I’ve been planning and training a type-exclusive team; in my case, Ground-types. And this week I’m waxing intellectual about a handy Ability that’s putting in an appearance on one of my roster. This is Ability of the Week: Sand Force!

It’s Friday, trainers! How’s your high-contrast pokémon-training going? I trust that the majority of you have made it past the elite four by now (I know I haven’t), but that’s not stopping me from waxing intellectual about some passive pokémon powers! If you’ve listened to me during Featured Team on It’s Super Effective, you probably know that I love using moves in the vein of Payback, Avalanche, and Revenge, and this week we’re talking about a cool new Ability from Pokemon Black and White Versions that compliments these kind of moves perfectly. It’s here, trainers! Pokemon Black and White Versions have officially dropped in the States, and kudos if you’ve been able to tear yourself away from it long enough to come to Ability class! I promise not to keep you for long this week, so you can get back to being much further along in the game than I am. To celebrate the release of generation five, this week we’re talking about one of the Abilities new to the game, and boy howdy could this sucker be a useful one, especially in the post-game. Give your DS’s a break and settle in, folks. This is Ability of the Week: Moxie!

Happy Friday, trainers, and happy 15th birthday to the monster-wrangling franchise we all love to play! This week we’re discussing an Ability that’s already been briefly touched on by the one and only Aaron “It’s Critical Hit” Spriggs in one of his early Move of the Week articles. Question: how do you make a 60 damage move a force to be reckoned with? Pay close attention, because this is Ability of the Week: Technician!

AOTW: Suction Cups

Hello, trainers! I’m back from my brief sabbatical with a new Ability of the Week. If you missed my post on PokéTalk, I was on vacation with my girlfriend over Valentine’s, then came home to a simply gargantuan amount of hours at my day job, and just couldn’t get around to writing up an article. So I apologize for the unscheduled break, and back to the Ability-learning!

Last time we discussed the most common Ability in the game, Levitate. This week, we’re going to the opposite end of the spectrum, with one of the most obscure Abilities, though not a monster-exclusive like Motor Drive. And appropriately enough, where the last Ability was all about keeping you off the ground, this week is about keeping your feet firmly planted. Stand your ground, folks- this is Ability of the Week: Suction Cups!
