PKMN of the Week: Latias and Latios

Happy Mother's Day!  Hopefully you remembered to do something nice for your mother today . . . if you haven't by the time PKMN of the Week is posted you may be in trouble.  Why don't you stop reading for a minute and give mom a call.  Don't worry, we'll be here when you get back.

Which Pokémon are better to discuss on Mother's day than the family oriented Latias and Latios, the brother and sister Dragon/Psychic-type Pokémon?

PKMN of the Week: Garchomp

When I go out on the town, which I tend to do on Friday nights, I like to check in to places on Foursquare.  Most of the places I frequent don't have bonuses for the mayor but I like being able to see who else has checked in at the same location and where my friends around the country are at the same time.

Unfortunately, downtown DC has terrible cellular coverage and it can be difficult to get a data connection when you are trying to check in.  This past Friday I was having just that problem, fiddling with my phone trying to check in, when a hand started waving over the screen.

PKMN of the Week: Salamence

Something amazing happened this past Thursday.  Something that has never, ever, ever, happened before.  I beat my friend Gabe in a Pokémon battle!  It was a real battle, too - he wasn't going easy on me.  We had gone a few rounds already, I was on my second beer, and I had figured there was no way that I was going to beat his Hydreigon, Zapdos, Archeops, and Starmie team.  What I didn't realize was he had decided to swap out his Starmie for a Cloyster.  What a mistake!  I had finally gotten my Whiscash to stomp Archeops, my Hydreigon somehow beat his Zapdos, and he was just left with just Hydreigon and Cloyster.  Well, if you don't know - I love my Volcarona.  While not my favorite Pokémon of all time, I love using it in battle.  Friends, just a little Bug Buzz from my Volcarona, David Hugs, and Hydreigon was down.  Cloyster came out and before he could set up with Shell Smash - Bug Buzz, Bug Buzz - Boom, Cloyster was down and Will was the winner!

All of this to remind you guys that Bug-types are 1,000 times more awesome than Dark-types and that the Pokémon this week is . . . Genesect!

PKMN of the Week: Heatran

I must confess, I am a total goof.  I started playing Pokémon Diamond when it first came out, but never finished.  What can I say?  Life got in the way.  Hopefully I will beat the elite four in Emerald soon so I can finally move on and restart Diamond.

I like a Fire-type.  Something about their passion and flaming tempers draws me in every time.  I also like a unique Pokémon - I know that isn't the best battle strategy but there is something about potentially surprising an opponent with a Pokémon they have never seen or whose type they can't identify that thrills me a bit.

PKMN of the Week: Metagross

"Dude, that's so meta."

Meta is a prefix, derived from ancient Greek, used to indicate concurrency and reference.  Metadata is included with your data and describes aspects of the data while remaining separate from the data itself.

"Yo, bro, that's gross."

Gross is a word descended from Latin, through French, and into Middle English that originally meant large.  In current English "gross" is no longer used this way and instead means a collection of twelve dozen (144) items.

Who is the heaviest of all the Pokémon?  Not Wailord.  Who is the brilliant mind trapped in a bulky body made for battle?

"Dude, that Metagross is huge, bro."

PKMN of the Week: Landorus

Another Sunday, another holiday!  Christians and consumerists are celebrating the season by reflecting on various fertility images - eggs that represent new life and rabbits that represent, well, what rabbits represent.  Spring is in the air, it's still chilly but there are signs that Winter is over and we see the regeneration of trees and plants around us.

Landorus is the Pokémon that represents a balanced environment that will assure a bountiful harvest.  The land is rich, there will not be too much wind or too much rain, and your plants will grow strong.  Landorus balances Tornadus and Thundurus, he stops the unfettered storms ravaging the Unova region.

PKMN of the Week:

PKMN of the Week: Dragonite

It's very still tonight, very quiet.  The dark is darker than usual and you can feel it as a presence in the room.  You put on a record but even that sounds oddly quiet - too far away.  You are alone and, strangely, your loneliness feels like a companion tonight.

Have you ever been out to sea?  In my youth I was a sailor - I've had the opportunity to sail both the Pacific and Atlantic.  When night falls on the ocean you learn what isolation is.  There is no one around for miles and, even if you knew where they were, how would you get to them?  The winds are still, the skies are clear, and you are staring out into a universe of cold stars.

Listen, though, are you truly alone?  There is life under the water.  You can hear the small waves ripple and splash against the hull - but what is that other noise?  Something deep, groaning, a bass so profound.  Some far off cargo ship plying the ocean on it's way to Europe or Asia?  Could it be something else, an antediluvian moan from an indescribable creature of the depths?

PKMN of the Week: Cresselia

I am still down here in Austin - the SXSW Music Conference is wrapping up and I will soon be enjoying many hours of much needed sleep.

During SXSW, depending on your point of view, the city of Austin can turn into a nightmare-scape.  All of downtown is closed off and literal hoards of people of all types - punk, country, hip hop, death metal, hipster, frat bros - mix in the streets (something along the lines of those first destruction scenes in Cloverfield).  The bass is turned up so loud in every club it sounds like explosions are going off from miles away.  The air hangs heavy with smoke of all kinds and laser lights project across the buildings overhead.  You can get caught up in the whirlwind of bands to see, take a turn down a wrong street, and stumble into a Harouki Zombi performance.

What balm can aid the troubled mind in such a scenario?  Who will come to your aid, bring you peace, and end the torment of phantasm?

PKMN of the Week: Hydreigon

Sometimes, PKMN of the Week travels to far off locations like Austin, TX.  Sometimes, PKMN of the Week gets caught up in the heady party atmosphere of the SXSW Conference.  Sometimes, PKMN of the Week wakes up in the morning feeling like soldiers from Panzer Command are marching through his head - Eins! Zwei! Drei!
